At Social Space ABA Therapy, we believe in making learning fun, motivating, and achievable for every child. One of our favorite tools to support this? Token boards! Whether you're new to ABA or just looking for a practical way to boost positive behavior at home, token boards are a powerful and easy-to-use strategy.
What is a Token Board?
A token board is a simple visual system used to reinforce positive behavior. Your child earns tokens—such as stars, smiley faces, or stickers—each time they complete a task, follow a direction, or engage in a desired behavior. Once the board is full, they receive a reward! This could be something like playtime, a favorite snack, or watching a beloved show.
Think of it like a child-friendly version of a punch card—you do the work, you earn the reward!

Why Do We Use Token Boards in ABA?
✔ Builds Motivation Kids are more likely to engage in challenging or less preferred tasks when they know something fun is waiting for them at the finish line.
✔ Visualizes Progress Children with autism often thrive with visual supports. Token boards give a clear, tangible way to see how close they are to earning something they love.
✔ Helps Kids Stay on Task Breaking a task into smaller, manageable steps with a token system helps reduce overwhelm and keeps your child focused.
✔ Encourages Independence As children learn how the system works, they begin to take ownership of their behavior and choices—paving the way for greater independence.
How Can I Start Using a Token Board at Home?
Start simple! Choose a behavior you’d like to reinforce (like cleaning up toys or brushing teeth) and a small, motivating reward. Keep the board visible, and celebrate each token earned. Over time, you can gradually increase the expectations or use the token board for multiple behaviors.
